Dr. Alanen is an authentic expert in the diagnosis and treatment of skin disease. He has special interests in skin cancer, lasers and acne. He has seventeen years of post secondary education (1987-2004).
Dr. Ken Alanen received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University of Western Ontario followed by a five year residency in Laboratory Medicine with FRCPC certification in 1999.
Subsequently, he completed a two year fellowship in Dermatopathology (the art and science of microscopic diagnosis of skin disease) at the University of Colorado under Dr Loren Golitz . He passed the subspecialty Dermatopathology examination, jointly administered by the American Boards of Pathology and Dermatology.
After his dermatopathology fellowship, Dr. Alanen completed a residency in Dermatology and received FRCPC certification in 2004. He has approval from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta for Mohs’ Micrographic Surgery.
Dr. Alanen has been an invited guest speaker at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting and has spoken many times on the national, provincial and local levels. He has also been an invited speaker in Japan. He has co-authored numerous peer reviewed studies as well as a textbook in Dermatology.
Dr Alanen is a formally trained and certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist. Dermatopathology is the art and science of the microscopic diagnosis of skin disease. It is how a doctor diagnoses your tissue when it is “sent away for testing”.
He has completed a two year fellowship in Dermatopathology, and provides diagnostic expertise daily. Dr Alanen is also the Director of the University of Alberta Dermatopathology Fellowship.

Dr. Alanen is a dermatologist, first and foremost. Dermatology is the medical specialty which deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of skin disease. In Canada, Dermatology is a five year post medical school residency program which thoroughly covers medical, paediatric, surgical, laser, oncologic aspects of skin disease.
Dr. Alanen has pursued post-residency training in lasers and skin cancer treatment. He has spoken internationally on multiple occasions and has coauthored peer-reviewed articles and a textbook.
